Of course I taught my staff the definition of verbal abuse and reminded them we must never make reference to anyone on the basis of their weight; and then one day….
Rosa let out a huff and exclaimed, “My name is Big Rosa!” Staff bristled and I told them all that from now on this is how we must refer to her. One aide quickly refused, citing how she had been trained. Her inflexibility in this and other areas eventually led to the loss of her job. The larger point? Of course we must avoid abuse of all types, but honoring certain personal preferences might give us the wiggle room to bend the rules in certain instances.
